About us

Why this exists

Buying a used car is one of the few everyday decisions where thousands of pounds change hands, yet buyers are expected to rely on:

Most vehicle checks tell you what exists.
Very few help you understand what matters. Before You Buy A Car exists to close that gap.

Before You Buy A Car exists to close that gap.

What we do differently

We don’t try to overwhelm you with data or push you toward a decision. Instead, we focus on three things:

The result is a clearer picture of the vehicle before you commit.

Why this exists

Buying a used car is one of the few everyday decisions where thousands of pounds change hands, yet buyers are expected to rely on:

  • fragmented data

  • technical language

  • or reassurance that comes after they’ve already decided

Most vehicle checks tell you what exists.
Very few help you understand what matters.

Before You Buy A Car exists to close that gap.

Founder’s note

I’ve spent most of my working life in the motor trade — first as a technician, then in aftersales and brand management roles.

Over time, a pattern became clear. Most buyers weren’t misled by dishonesty; they were caught out by misunderstanding.
Technical language, incomplete context, and poorly timed checks made it difficult to know what really mattered before committing.

Before You Buy A Car was built to address that gap — using the same information buyers already have access to, but presented in a way that supports calm, informed decisions at the right moment.

It isn’t about telling people what to buy.
It’s about helping them understand what they’re looking at, before money changes hands.

About Before You Buy A Car

Why this exists

Buying a used car is one of the few everyday decisions where thousands of pounds change hands, yet buyers are expected to rely on:

  • fragmented data

  • technical language

  • or reassurance that comes after they’ve already decided

Most vehicle checks tell you what exists.
Very few help you understand what matters.

Before You Buy A Car exists to close that gap.

What we do differently

We don’t try to overwhelm you with data or push you toward a decision.

Instead, we focus on three things:

  • Interpretation — translating technical vehicle information into plain, usable insight

  • Preparation — helping you understand what to ask before you negotiate

  • Context — showing how condition, history, and risk relate to price

The result is a clearer picture of the vehicle before you commit.

How the product is built

The service combines:

  • Official UK government vehicle and MOT data

  • Model-specific ownership and maintenance insights

  • Independent market pricing references

  • Purchase-protection checks available once you choose to unlock the full report

Free information is provided first, so you can understand the vehicle at a meaningful level without pressure.
Paid checks are used only to complete the picture, not to create fear.

Our perspective

Before You Buy A Car is shaped by long-term experience inside the motor trade — not from selling reports, but from seeing where buyers are most often caught out.

That experience informs:

  • which issues matter and which are noise

  • how sellers typically explain problems

  • and where negotiation is usually possible

The aim is not to tell you what to buy, but to help you make a confident, informed decision.

What we deliberately avoid

  • Scare tactics

  • Sensational warnings

  • Colour-coded panic dashboards

  • Selling reassurance instead of understanding

Buying a car is already stressful enough.
The role of this service is to reduce uncertainty, not add to it.

Who this is for

Before You Buy A Car is for people who want to:

  • sense-check an asking price

  • understand potential ownership risks

  • ask better questions

  • and negotiate with evidence rather than instinct

It’s designed to be used on your phone, at the vehicle, when it actually matters.

Independence

Before You Buy A Car is independent.

We don’t sell vehicles.
We don’t work for dealers.
We don’t receive commission for recommendations.

The only incentive is to provide a clearer view of the vehicle in front of you.

In summary

Before You Buy A Car is not about finding the “perfect” car.
It’s about helping you understand the one you’re looking at, clearly and calmly, before money changes hands.
